When it comes to choosing material, there are several solutions available. The most common are shingles and metal roofing, which can also be divided into further subcategories. It’s important to become familiar with the options to reach an understanding with your roofing contractor and make an informed decision on how to proceed with your project.

SHINGLES

Asphalt shingles, also known as composite shingles, are the most common roofing material used on homes in the U.S. They are designed to last decades with minimal maintenance and are among the most affordable roofing options. Shingles come in many different colors and styles, but they all fall into three major categories; 3 Tab, Architectural, and Luxury.  We source our material from manufacturers at the forefront of the industry.  CertainTeed supplies unbeatable quality and a range of options guaranteed to exceed expectations.  All products are backed by warranties that stand firm behind their top standards.

3-TAB

3-tab, or strip shingles, are the most basic option for asphalt shingles. They are produced of only a single layer of asphalt making them thinner, lighter and cheaper than other types. This sole layer of asphalt does not provide as much protection or longevity as other options.

ARCHITECTURAL

Architectural shingles, also known as dimensional or laminate shingles are the most popular type of asphalt shingles. They consist of two or more layers of asphalt fused together creating a thicker, heavier product with more dimension, closely resembling the appearance of the wood shake and natural slate roof. This sturdier design is accompanied by improved warranty protection. We recommend architectural shingles to homeowners as the most valuable, reliable choice regarding asphalt shingle roofing options.

LUXURY

Luxury shingles are the heaviest and thickest laminated shingles available. They offer the closest resemblance to wood shake and quarried slate roofing as well as premium protection from weathering. These are the most expensive of the three types of shingles discussed.

METAL

Metal roofing is another popular option for several reasons.  First of all longevity, a metal roof can last 40 to 70+ years depending on type and quality of metal.  Choices range from aluminum, tin, copper, zinc or galvanized steel.  They are quite durable and can resist severe wind gusts, heavy impact, not flammable and wont corrode or crack, (again depending on type). Little maintenance is required, although periodic inspection should be performed to ensure no repairs are needed. Metal roofs reflect heat from the suns rays, which can reduce energy costs and are recyclable making them an environmentally friendly choice. Metal is quite a bit more expensive than other roofing materials so this choice makes more sense if you are planning to keep your home long enough to reap the benefits of your investment.
